Back in the year 2006, My journey took me to Canberra for a medical school interview. I assumed I would book accommodation upon arrival, however upon reaching the city, a big convention was happening and every single backpackers hostels and budget accommodation had no vacancies.

Coming from the city-state of Singapore, I thought the possibility of bed down in the airport – but quickly found the local airport, unlike Singapore’s, closes 24 hours. With no idea how to proceed and feeling increasingly desperate, I boarded a city-bound bus and found myself drifting towards a gaming venue, believing it was a place to spend the night somewhere that was open 24/7. Admittedly, this plan in the best shape to succeed at the admissions interview the next morning, but as a cash-strapped student, I couldn’t afford.

The world needs more folks like that woman.

It seems I seemed confused since a young woman saw me walking aimlessly through the city and asked whether I needed help. I shared my situation and immediately she suggested I could sleep on the floor of her dormitory at ANU – which was perfect, considering that was where my interview was the following day. She went further by offering some food: one of the filled rolls she brought back her part-time job. I had access to a hot shower and somewhere safe and safe for the evening.

Looking back, I now understand the enormous leap of faith she undertook being a woman letting a male stranger she’d just met crash at her place. Back then I was in a bubble of male privilege and did not consider to such safety concerns. Now, as a father, I am astonished she did that – and remain incredibly thankful.

I didn’t end up go to the Australian National University, and I didn’t meet that kind stranger again, yet her memory has stayed with me that incredible gesture of kindness. My sincere desire is that karma has rewarded her good deed many times over. We could all use more individuals who show such kindness.
