Antony Price, Famed for Styling Bowie and Duran Duran, Passes Away at Age 80.
The British designer Antony Price, the groundbreaking style architect responsible for many legendary styles associated with artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has passed away aged 80.
Price was best known for his defined forms and theatrical styles, such as the light-hued ensembles that became famous from the pop-rock group Duran Duran's classic music video for "Rio".
"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' Duran Duran shared a message on social media."
Price's death comes shortly after he presented his newest line in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. Artist Lily Allen modelled a dress that paid homage to the notorious black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" historically worn by Diana, Princess of Wales.
An Enduring Influence
Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price relocated to London at the start of the 1960s to attend the renowned Royal College of Art.
Upon completing his studies, he began designing men's fashion at the label Stirling Copper and was the creator of the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that rock legend Mick Jagger sported during the iconic group's "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.
He established his eponymous line in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show opened with looks from the famed model Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the wedding dress Price specifically designed for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.
Collaborations with Icons
A frequent collaborator of the late David Bowie, Price designed the distinctive jacket the singer wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His characteristic talent to fuse tailoring for all genders along with his masterful technique in shaping form-fitting garments cemented his status as a "true original," according to the British Fashion Council.
In the 1990s, he began working on outfits for Camilla, now Queen Consort, including several ensembles for her tour of the United States following her marriage.
Following a profession lasting more than five decades, Price presented his final runway show in London recently in conjunction with the label 16Arlington.
